Personal Care Assistants

Defined by Community Long Term Care (CLTC) 

Description of Services To Be Provided: 

Personal Care Services

  1. The Unit of Service is one (1) hour or direct services provided in the participant’s residence.  The amount of time authorized does not include the aide’s transportation time to and from the participant’s residence.  Off-site services or escort service also include Shopping, Laundry services and other transport to doctor offices and pharmacies.
  2. The number of units and services provided to each participant are determined by the individual participant’s needs as set forth in the participant’s Service Plan/Authorization.
  3. Under no circumstances will a PCA furnish any type of skilled medical service.
  4. Services to be provided include:
    • Meal Planning and preparation
    • Light house cleaning
    • Laundry
    • Shopping
    • Home safety
    • Errands
    • Escort service to Dr. Appointments and Pharmacies
    • Limited assistance with financial matters such as delivering payments to designated recipients on behalf of the participant.  Receipts for payment are always returned to the participant
    • Assistance with communication which includes, but is not limited to placing the phone within the participants reach and physically assisting the participants with use of the phone
    • Orientation to daily events
    • Observing and reporting on the participant’s condition
    • Bathing (Bed bath, bench shower, sink bath)
    • Personal grooming, hygiene and skin care (applying lotion, oil, etc...)
    • Assisting participants in and out of bed
    • Repositioning participants as is necessary
    • Assisting with ambulation (walking)
    • Toileting and maintaining continence
    • Monitoring medication (for example, informing the participant that it is time to take medication as prescribed by his or her physician and as written on the medication container.  Aides do not administer the medication, however, this does not preclude the aide from handing the medicine container to the participant).
    • The provision of transportation may be included once a week and/or as approved




Companion Care Services

  1. Socialization – reading conversation, assistance with mail and other interaction with participant as appropriate
  2. Assistance with or supervision of meal/snack preparation
  3. Assistance with or supervision of participand laundry (washing clothes and linen)
  4. Assistance with or supervision of participant’s shopping
  5. Sitting service focusing on the participant
